GPON technical characteristics are mainly reflected in the transmission convergence layer. GPON protocol, in which the transport convergence layer is divided into PON framing sublayer and adaptive sublayer.

The framing sublayer of GTC (GPON Transmission Convergence) completes the encapsulation of the GTC frame, terminates the required ODN transmission function, and the specific functions of the PON (such as ranging, bandwidth allocation, etc.) are also terminated at the framing sublayer of PON. The adaptation sub layer of the GTC provides the interface between the PDU and the upper layer entity. ATM and GEM information complete the business data unit (SDU) and protocol data unit PDU conversion in the respective sub-sub-layer. The OMCI adaptation sublayer is higher than the ATM and GEM adaptation sublayer, it recognizes VPI / VCI and Port - ID and completes the exchange of OMCI channel data with high - level entities.
